Frequently Asked Questions

General

Is FinLinux OS really free?

Yes, unconditionally. No subscription is required to download, install, or run FinLinux OS in production on any number of systems.

How is FinLinux OS funded if it's free?

Through Foundation memberships and sponsorships, not through selling the OS. See Membership.

Who owns FinLinux OS?

The FinLinux OS Foundation, a nonprofit trade association with no single corporate owner. See About.

Compatibility

Is FinLinux OS really binary compatible with RHEL?

Yes — FinLinux OS is built from the same upstream sources, with only rebranding-level patches applied. See Build System.

Will my kernel modules and drivers work?

Kernel ABI compatibility is a core design goal; modules built against the matching upstream kernel version work unmodified.

Can ISVs certify software for FinLinux OS?

Yes, through our certification program, typically completed in days given existing RHEL certification.

Migration

Can I convert an existing system without reinstalling?

Yes, using FinShift. See Migrate for supported paths.

What happens to my data during migration?

FinShift replaces OS packages only; it does not touch /home, application data directories, or anything outside the package manager's scope. Always back up first regardless.

Support & lifecycle

How long is each release supported?

10 years total per major version: 5 years full support, 5 years maintenance support. See the lifecycle table.

Do I have to buy a support contract?

No. Community support is free and active. Paid SLA-backed support is available from independent partners if you want it. See Get Support.

How do I report a security vulnerability?

Privately, to security@finlinux.org. See Security → Report a vulnerability.

Getting involved

How do I start contributing?

Join a SIG via the Community Hub — packaging, testing, documentation, and community support are all open, ongoing needs.

Can my company sponsor the project?

Yes — see Membership for organizational tiers.
